Fake or Real?

Taking a break from packing, I can across this site on DesignVerb that tests to see if you can spot fake smiles versus genuine ones. I got 16 out of 20! Pretty good to me!

Why5Oh Contest: Results

Maybe it's because it's the 3rd year running, but this year's contest was the best run - we finished before the sun went down, everyone got awesome prizes, and no one "almost" drowned. And maybe it's because I was only 1 of 3 girls there, but the day's most frequently asked question was "When's my heat because I gotta take a dump?". The day's highlights - getting to wear my Covered, playing with the giant dog, and getting in trouble with the realtor. I'm already counting down to Contest 4!

Yellow Fever

Read an interesting article about yellow fever (fetish for Asian people) here. Who knew the fetish extended to gay men too! I just learned a new term: Rice Queen. Guess I won't be crowning myself the queen of rice anytime soon.

Why5Oh 3rd Annual Bodyboarding Contest

It's that time of year again! This Friday, Jeff and I will be heading down to North Carolina. I'll have my calculator in hand to tally and the guys will be in their wetsuits. Pictures to come.

Halloween '06

Kumar: [sniffs] Hey, what's that smell?
Harold: What smell? Kumar...
Kumar: [starts sniffing like a crazed bloodhound, and then sees a huge bag of marijuana, his eyes widen]
Harold: Hey Kumar! Kumar! Where are you...
[Kumar rushes to the bag of marijuana]
Harold: Kumar! Still in jail, asshole! Come here!

One giant ziploc bag and a couple of Christmas garlands and you've got a costume that's probably inappropriate for the kids in Brooklyn Heights (Mommy, why is that lady in a giant bag ? And what's all that green stuff in there?), but makes the NYU kids sitting in the McDonald's laugh.

What are you?

It's hard enough being Filipino - people know that you're Asian, but they have no idea what kind (the darker skin confuses them) ,so they'll ask you in a very roundabout way exactly what you are. For example, the dental hygenist at my dentist's office recently asked me:
Her: "Sooo... where are you from?"
Me: "Virginia"
Her: "Huh!" (looks
confused... shuffles around awkwardly)
Her: " Soo.... where are your parents
from?"
Me: "The Philippines. I'm Filipino"
Her: "Ha! I knew that!"
Me: (thinks to myself "Then why'd you ask?")

Sometimes I think it's better when people are blunt and just say "So, what are you?".

However, being Filipino must not nearly be as hard as being a hapa - someone that is part Asian, part something else. They must get asked "what are you?" all the time! Now Kip Fulbeck from The Hapa Project has come out with a coffeebook profiling hundreds of hapa (Allison, great book for Hayden!). I wonder if they think of Filipinos - part Chinese/part Malyasian/part something Asian + Spanish part of the original hapa.

K, Bye!

Last night we bid a fond farewell to Kristina Walden. This weekend, in true globetrotter form, she'll be leaving NY for a few months to visit exotic locations in India and Europe. Thankfully, she passed her driver's test this week and now has a drivers license so this time, as long as she has her passport, she'll get to actually leave the country!

Pictures were taken by my fabulous Nokia 6682 cameraphone (that was for you, Jodi) which actually takes clear pictures (any blurriness can be blamed on my chardonnay). Enjoy!

Barbie and Tanner

I know what I want for Christmas. You feed Barbie's dog Tanner and then press on his tail and he poops. You can then pick up the poop with a pooper scooper - to make it easy, the poop is magnetic. What little girl wouldn't want this!

Streetwars: They're Baacckkk

Wow, I'm on a roll today... at least everyone can stop telling me I'm lazy with my posts.

Monday marks the start of Streetwars this year. I somehow forgot to sign up, but as you'll remember from my experience last year, it may be for the better. Go here and here.

For those that don't know what Streetwars is, check this out:
StreetWars is a 3 week long, 24/7, watergun assassination tournament that has already taken place in New York City, Vancouver, Vienna, San Francisco, Los Angeles, London, and is now coming back to NYC .

At the start of the game you will receive a manila envelope containing the following:* A picture of your intended target(s)
* The home address of your intended target(s)
* The work address of your intended target(s)
* The name of your intended target(s)
* Contact information of your intended target(s)Upon receipt of these items, your (or your team's) mission is to find and kill (by way of water gun, water balloon or super soaker) your target(s).

You can hunt your target down any way you see fit; you can pose as a delivery person and jack them when they open the door, disguise yourself and take them out on the street, etc.If you are successful in your assassination attempt, the person you killed will give you their envelope and the person they were supposed to kill becomes your new target. This continues until you work yourself through all the players and retrieve the envelope with your (or your team's) picture(s) and name(s). Then you win. Cash but first live in fear.

New Blog Shout Outs

Two new blogs I've been reading:
Allison and her pregnancy adventure: Baby Building
Julie and her fabulous NY life: The Vanity Projector
I especially love the post about pregnancy and belly buttons on Allison's site. The main thing I'm looking forward to when I'm pregnant is seeing how my belly button changes...

I'm Lovin' It

For those that know me, you'll know that I love McDonald's (actually, let's face it, I love all greasy fast food). In college, some people called me Big Mac; I tried to hold all Stern group meetings at the McDonald's on 8th and Broadway. You'll understand then how ecstatic I am to learn this news (courtesy of E. Garvey): McDonald's Mulls All Day Breakfast.... just like going to IHOP, but faster!

I'm technically still taking my "summer break" from blogging, but I thought I'd share some pictures from Dumbo on Saturday. After brunch at Bubby's and a visit to Jacques Torres to get an Almond Milk Chocolate bar, Jeff and I stumbled across a kayak race right by the bridget... isn't the water there yucky?
